How to Get to Chueca

By Car

Exit the motorway you arrive on (A‑1, A‑2, A‑3, A‑4 or A‑5) and follow the signs for M‑30 / Centro. Enter the M‑30 and take the exit toward Calle de Alcalá or Paseo de la Castellana, depending on your entry point. Continue straight until you see signs for Centro – Plaza de Cibeles. From there, take Calle de Alcalá and turn onto Calle de Barquillo until you reach Plaza de Chueca.

m30 madrid

About the M‑30: This ring road surrounds central Madrid. It was originally built as a peripheral highway, but the city has grown so much that another similar one, the M‑40, was later constructed. For locals, the M‑30 is a key reference point: it makes moving around the city much faster. For longer trips, it’s often worth using the M‑30 to avoid traffic lights inside the city.

Tip: The M‑30 is Madrid’s inner ring road. It was once considered peripheral, but today it’s a key reference for locals to move quickly around the city. For longer trips, it’s often worth using the M‑30 to avoid traffic lights inside the city.

Parking in central Madrid is difficult:

  • 24h underground car parks on Gran Vía and Calle Barquillo.
  • Regulated parking zones (blue/green) with a 2‑hour limit.

Getting Around Madrid by Metro

Madrid’s metro is one of the fastest and most convenient ways to move around the city, with more than 300 stations and 12 lines, each identified by a number and color.

1. Buying a Ticket or Card

  • Multi Card: rechargeable, required for single tickets or passes. Available at any station machine (€2.50).
  • Single or 10‑trip tickets: loaded onto the Multi Card. Within Zone A (central Madrid), trips cost €1.50–2.00.
  • Tourist Travel Pass: unlimited rides for 1, 2, 3, 5 or 7 days (metro, bus, commuter trains).

Tip: The same card works for metro and bus. For example, if you buy a 10‑trip pass, you can use it interchangeably on metro or bus. If you just arrived and need a bus but don’t have a card yet, go into the nearest metro station, buy a Multi Card at a machine, and then use it immediately on the bus.

2. Identifying the Line and Direction

Each line has a number and a color (Line 1 is blue, Line 2 is red, etc.).

  • To know which direction to take, look at the name of the final station of the line.
  • Example: Line 1 southbound is “Valdecarros.”

Making a Transfer

If you need to change lines, look for stations where more than one line number appears above the station name. Each number corresponds to a line that also stops there.

  • Signs and arrows: On the walls you’ll see signs with line numbers and arrows. The number is the line, the arrow shows the direction to follow.
  • Two directions per line: Every line has two directions, each named after its final station.
  • How to check you’re on the right platform:
    • Above the platform entrance you’ll see the name of the last station.
    • Below it, there’s a list of all the stations that train will pass through.
    • If your destination is not on that list, you’re on the wrong platform.
  • Don’t worry if you make a mistake: Everyone does at some point. Just get off at the next stop and switch to the opposite platform.

Access and Use

  • Tap your card at the gate and keep your ticket in case inspectors ask.
  • On the platforms, screens show how many minutes until the next train.
  • Trains run every 2–5 minutes at peak times, 7–10 minutes off‑peak.

Useful Tips

  • Operating hours: 6:00–1:30 daily.
  • Avoid rush hours (8:00–9:30 and 18:00–19:30) if traveling with luggage.
  • Download the official Metro de Madrid app or use Google Maps for easy route planning.
  • From the airport, Line 8 (pink) connects directly to the center (with a €3 airport supplement).
  • Using Google Maps: Enter your destination, tap “Directions,” then select the public transport icon.
    • Blue squares with numbers = bus lines.
    • Colored squares with numbers = metro lines.
    • You’ll see estimated travel times and step‑by‑step instructions.
